Google Apps for Education

9-30-14

Dear Parent/Guardian,

This year Capistrano Unified School District has provided students in grades 3 – 12 access to Google Apps for Education. Google Apps for Education includes a suite of web-based programs providing word processing, research, and collaboration tools for CUSD students and teachers. The effective use of these tools will help prepare and engage our 21st century learners. While a full suite of tools provided by Google is valuable, not all tools will be offered.  The District will determine which specific tools are most appropriate for each educational level.

Goggle Apps for Education runs on an Internet domain managed by CUSD and is intended for educational use only. As a cloud-based suite, Apps for Education will be available at school and at home via the web. Parents are encouraged to explore the Google Apps with their child by logging in together. Students have been cautioned that District provided Google accounts are not private and that their accounts may be monitored for compliance with District policies.

School staff will monitor students’ use of Google Apps and the Internet at all times when students are in class.  Even though the District utilizes a strict Internet filter software program, it is still possible that students may unintentionally access inappropriate content. The filter, although not an exact science, attempts to block inappropriate images and updates nightly in an effort to block content posted daily to the web. Students and staff are to alert administration immediately in the event that inappropriate content is accessed. Parents are responsible for monitoring their child’s use of Google Apps and the Internet when accessing online programs at home. It is recommended parents apply filters on their home network and discuss safe searching and communication online to support preparing students for their future.

Because the District is providing these services, we want to make you are aware of some of the educational features Google Apps for Education provides:

  • Parents always have access to their child’s Google Apps account.
  • Google Apps include such services as Google Docs, spreadsheets, drawings, video & photo editing tools
  • Email and Google Hangouts are not available at this time.

More information will be shared during the year through classroom communication.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Tim Reece
