SBAC Parent Letter

Dear Parent or Guardian,

This Spring, our students will once again be participating in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). CAASPP is the State’s academic testing program and includes the computer-adaptive Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA), California Alternate Assessment (CAA), and the new California Science Test (CAST). It is a system intended to provide information that can be used to monitor student progress on an annual basis and ensure that all students leave high school ready for college and career.

Our students in grades 6-8 will take the SBA or CAA. Additionally, students in grade 8 will take the CAST.

Teachers have been preparing students for these assessments throughout the year by implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in their curriculum. Students have also had the opportunity to take similar types of online tests through the District’s Common Interim Assessments (CIAs) and Common Formative Assessments (CFAs). The administration of the actual tests won’t occur until later in the Spring. Our school is still finalizing the specific testing window and will provide those dates as soon as they have been determined.

Should you wish to provide opportunities for your child to practice these tests prior to the actual administration, they can be found at this link: and clicking on Student Interface Practice and Training Tests. Additional resources for parents are also available through the California Department of Education (, the California PTA (, and Capistrano USD (

Results from CAASPP testing this Spring will be available next Fall, except for CAST. The 2016-2017 administration of CAST is considered a pilot so no results will be available. Results from the other CAASPP assessments will be mailed home and available through the Aeries Parent Portal.

As always, staff are here to support parents and students. Counselors are available to help alleviate testing anxiety students may experience. Please do not hesitate to reach out to our office with any questions or concerns.
